ARTIST STATEMENT
Recreating magazine photos with small dots of greasy oil pastels during my pointillism assignment at the age of 15 sparked my interest in optical mixing. Rather than bored by the repetitive motion like most of my classmates, I was mentally soothed and eager to see the perceived colors that resulted from the project. My color theory class in college reignited my interest in colors ability to play tricks on the human brain and eyes, whether that is partitive color mixing or vibrating colors. My current body of work is heavily influenced by my love and interest in color theory.
Although I very much enjoyed the process of creating a work in traditional pointillism, I’ve never been fond of the resulting piece. I wanted to create my own style that gave me more freedom to play with texture, movement and economy. I found arranging my own colors with the use of benday dots, popular in pop art, gave me that freedom. I enjoy making very tight small dots, which give that traditional perceived color, but also using large, spaced dots to give an almost implied mixture. I use a combination of acrylic paints, spray paint and paint markers. I create my own stencils for the spray paint, which adds a lovely texture to balance out the solid acrylic paint and adds a jolt of visual interest. The paint markers have given me a way to incorporate my first love, drawing, into my painting, which also adds a nice linear quality to my work. Experimentation is the root of all my projects and my style is ever evolving with the addition or subtraction of mediums.
When I'm not creating art, I enjoy spending time in nature with my love and babies. My favorite activities are hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, gardening, wildflower hunting, yoga and attending live music.
I work out of a studio space in 3 Square Art in Fort Collins, Colorado. I love studio visits!
